The Social model looks at the disability as the result of a person with an impairment living in a world full of barriers. It believes that people are disabled by the society around them, for example physical barriers, communication barriers, the attitudes of others etc. When barriers are removed disabled people can be independent and equal in society.
Disabled people developed the social model of disability because they felt the medical model did not explain their personal experience if disability or help to develop a more inclusive way of living. |

The Normalisation Model
The Normalisation model aims for people with learning disabilities to experience 'normal' patterns of every day living, for examples living in 'normal' places and doing 'normal' day to day activities. It is based on the idea of integrating individuals in to the community.
This idea saw the move away from institutions where individuals were hidden away, to one where they were included within the community. It was thought that seeing people with disabilities as neighbours, employees, family members etc. would change the presumption that they were 'different.' This is where the idea of Care in the Community stems from. However it was believed that this was appopriate for all service users, despite their level of need. |
