“The scandal of Winterbourne View highlighted the devastating impact inappropriate care settings can have on people with a learning disability. The Care Quality Commission has a crucial responsibility to ensure that services registering to care for and support people with a learning disability are focused on delivering person-centred care in an environment that meets their individual needs and promotes their independence as far as possible."

A policy which is very important within settings working with individuals with additional needs is a 'Whistle blowing Policy' this helps to safeguard the individuals and ensure that they are being treated in the correct manner. You are protected by this policy if you make a complaint about the following things:
|
Boosting Self Image/Esteem
According to Voigt (2018) self image/esteem is a term used to describe how we view ourselves, how we view our worth as a person. A challenge for an individual with a disability may be viewing themselves as a person first, remembering their disability is one part of them not all of them. Self esteem and confidence are crucial in giving people with disabilities a sense of well-being and of being valued. Each service will aim to ensure they are working in a positive manner to boost their service users self image/esteem. |
Promoting Independence
As individuals become more independent, they gain the self-confidence to handle many of the challenges life may throw their way. Learning basic skills can lead to learning more complex skills, which can open up individual's eyes to what they are capable of. Services will utilise individual choice and person centred care to promote independence. |
Find an example of a Statutory, Private and Charity service which the person in your case study may access - read about the service and find example of how they might promote the individual's self-image and independence?
