Disability
Impairment
There are many different types of additional needs*, everyone has additional needs at some point, these may be minor, life altering, short term, long term etc. These do not imply neediness, weakness, that we or the individual can't do things for themselves.
These additional needs can usually be categorised in to THREE GROUPS:
Physical additional needs are mainly associated with mobility and the impact they have on a persons ability to physically function. In most cases they permanently prevent normal body movement or control.
Cognitive additional needs refer to any disability affecting mental processes. Some of the main categories that may be affected are memory, problem solving, attention and verbal comprehension. These needs are associated with learning disability.
Sensory additional needs arise when one of your senses does not function in the 'normal' manner. Either your sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste, spacial awareness or a number of them may be affected.
*Each of the above individuals have additional needs - They do not 'suffer' from additional needs.
